The Greater Cleveland Flute Society was begun as a group of flute enthusists in 1997 and officially became incorporated in Ohio on July 14, 2011. The GCFS is governed by a board of directors who volunteer their time in order to achieve the Society's mission:

1. Promote and encourage interest and study of the flute in the community at all levels
2. Sponsor and promote recitals, masterclasses,concerts and lectures which feature the flute
3. Sponsor and promote flute education and instruction in the community
4. Participate in or provide outreach activities to the community to enhance awareness of music and the flute
5. Cooperate with related regional and national organizations such as the National Flute Association
